“I’m sorry,” he said.

“I know,” she responded. With her free arm, she buttoned her shirt. He meant it. Repulsion and self-loathing pooled in his eyes.

He continued to hold firmly onto her, no doubt ready for an attack and possible arrest. With knowledge of her true identity, he had to realize her combatant skills were significantly better than what she indicated.

As soon as she finished the last button, he again cuffed her hands behind her. “I’m going to take you somewhere and drop you off.”

Her heart ached but with mixed emotion. Whatever else Gregg Hadyn was, he wasn’t a bad guy. She saw his hesitancy and dislike for what he felt he had to do. She totally got it. But in the end, he was still a thief, and she was still working with the FBI. She had to find a way to bring him in.

“Before you do that, I want to tell you something,” she said. His jaw clenched, but she plunged forward anyway. “Last night wasn’t just about trying to catch you.”

He pointed to his computer. Her official picture smiled back at her.

“I know. I’m not denying I’m an operative or that I’ve been undercover all week in the sting to apprehend you. But after you kidnapped me, and I got to know you—the real you—a little better, everything became a little more personal.”

He pushed out a mirthless laugh. “Yeah, right.”

“Just hear me out, okay?”

“Why? Why should I believe anything you say?”

“You can make that decision when I’m finished.”

A modicum of fear momentarily reared inside her as his usually soft, baby-blue irises frosted with contempt. Now that all the cards were on the table, might he try more than restraining her? She flinched as his arm came toward her, but he only grasped her other arm. Walking her over to the table, he pulled out two chairs, and with an unexpectedly gentle touch, guided her into one. He sat across from her. “You’ve got two minutes.”

She perched on the edge of the chair. Where to begin? She didn’t know, but she had to say something that would grab his attention. “When the museum alarm sounded, Denny and I were in the hotel lobby. You caught us off guard. He didn’t expect you to rob the museum until after midnight. As soon as we heard it, he told me to change and meet him at the museum, then he took off. I remembered that you knew how many buildings lay between the hotel and the museum. When I realized I might know your escape route, I ignored Denny’s orders and took off after you. I convinced myself my pursuit was solely to apprehend you. But that wasn’t entirely true. If I really wanted to subdue you, I could’ve called Denny or at least retrieved my gun before giving chase. Truth is, I wanted to give you a chance to do the right thing—to turn yourself in.”

He hung on her every word, but, sucking his teeth with a bitter countenance and a shaking head, as soon as she paused, he returned to his accusations.
